




Officer Eric Kelly lay dying on the sidewalk outside a house on Fairfield Street, struck by multiple rounds fired from an assault rifle from inside the home in Stanton Heights. The wounded patrolman kept trying to raise his arm in a plea for help. As other patrolmen shot at the house to suppress the gunfire coming from inside, Officer Tim McManaway made his way to Officer Kelly's side and dragged him to safety. Officer Kelly asked him to relay a message for him. "'Tell my wife and kids I love them,'" Officer McManaway recalled, pausing to regain his composure. - Paula Reed Ward
