Liz Smith's Last Column for NY Post

HAIL AND FAREWELL! This column marks my last for the New York Post, where I've been writing for 14 years. I am sorry to go. But I've lived long enough to know the closing of one door means the opening of another.

Tomorrow marks the first time in 33 years that the Liz Smith column will not appear in a New York City newspaper. But it's exhilarating to be fired at age 86. So, thanks for all your support and enthusiasm over the years and much love to each of you.

'People don't actually read newspapers. They get into them every morning, like a hot bath," wrote Marshall McLuhan. I am going to miss being in the "hot bath" of this newspaper.

"I think even at a young age I became aware that two kinds of fame were available: One you get from building this great church; the other you get from burning it down." - Lucas Samaras, Andy Warhol's Interview March 2009

The Pet Shop Boys performed a medley at the BritsPet Shop Boys to compose ballet
The Pet Shop Boys are working on a ballet featuring "electronics and strings" to be staged at Sadler's Wells, Neil Tennant has revealed. The singer told Radio 2 presenter Stuart Maconie that the piece, based on a Hans Christian Andersen story, could open at the London theatre in 2011. He and keyboardist Chris Lowe were composing an original score, he said.
Winning an outstanding contribution at Wednesday night's Brit Awards had given the duo "a warm feeling", he added."It's quite a big project. There's a lot of music to write but we've written half an hour of it and we've done a bit of a workshop with them. "It's got a story, it's like a Tchaikovsky ballet in that it's based on a story by Hans Christian Andersen but we've got the choreographer sorted out now. He added: "We're going to be working on that across the year but we're touring so we probably won't get it really finished until the end of next year." -BBC News

First Party

The President and First Lady hosted their first formal dinner in Washington, inviting the nation's governors, in town for the National Governors Association meeting, and their spouses to the White House. The menu, according to AP, was designed to reflect the season and represent the American spirit. It included red dragon carrots from Ohio, beef from Nebraska, watermelon radishes grown in the Washington area, and sea scallops from Massachusetts. The dessert featured huckleberries from Idaho. Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was not in attendance.
Condoleezza Rice's Mother

Condi's 3-Book Deal-
The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Bush officials are having trouble finding new employment, but Condoleezza Rice will be okay: She’s signed a three-book deal with Crown publishers for at least $2.5 million. The first book will be a memoir of the Bush years and will be published in 2011. She will follow up with a memoir and a young-adult book about her family. -The Daily Beast
